I've been saying the same things in my columns for years, but the problem is that many (most?) people view the world through an emotional, not a rational, lens.

For many people that lens is: "Poor people are poor because they are lazy and stupid and they just want the gov't to take money from the good, hard-working people so they can get stuff without working for it. If they were only intelligent and worked hard they would have all the money they need."

All lies. All false. But as difficult to convince them of that as it is to convince a racist that their racist ideas are nonsense.
