Jim, I look at his base this way:
- The traditional conservatives who got lucky in life’s lottery and want success in life to continue to operate on principle of “the luck of the draw” or “let the chips fall where they may.”
- The racists who see non-whites as lazy and violent people who want to take their money and get a free ride and who want a government that will keep them out and stop them from doing that
- The gun people
- The religious fundamentalists who want Supreme Court justices who will overturn the right to abortions and gay marriage.
To a greater or lesser extent these groups overlap but collectively they represent 40% to 45% of the electorate. If the Democrats nominate a candidate who does not aggressively threaten one or more of those groups, Trump will lose.
If the Dems’ candidate is gay, a minority, or very progressive that base will turn out in droves and enough apathetic people in the middle will either not vote or will reluctantly vote for Mr. T that he will be re-elected.
I still think Michael Bloomberg should be the Dem’s candidate but he doesn’t have the heart for the fight.
To me, the Democrat left’s fatal flaw is believing that people’s personal dislike for Mr. T means that they won’t vote for him. That’s not true. People will vote for Satan himself if they think he’s going to do what they want done and the other guy will do what they don’t want done.
The Dems’ left wing doesn’t get it that the principle of “Yes, he’s a jerk but he’s OUR jerk” is a fact of life, and for many of the people who personally hate Trump, he’s still their jerk and they’re going to vote for him if the Democrat candidate upsets them enough.
