Kris, this issue is wider than writers. When I was in college I would often run into people who said they wanted to be artists. I had a friend who published illustrated books and I would tell the wannabe artists, “Create an illustration that would go with this chapter in this book and I’ll give it to my friend who’s always looking for new artists.”

Not one of these “I want to be an artist” people actually got off their butt and did it. They wanted to talk about being an artist without the work of actually being one.

As the author of seventeen novels, three collections of short stories, eleven screen plays and over 140 Medium articles, my opinion is that what you said in this column is absolutely, totally, correct.
