The conservative position is fundamentally wrong in two basic ways: (1) It’ based on their moral judgments — poor people are lazy and stupid and thus deserve to suffer, and, if they suffer enough, they will get smarter and more productive — wrong; (2) that there is no body politic and that the actions of individuals do not have any effects on others in that society.

Your appendix may be a useless organ but if you say, “The appendix is worthless and I’m not going to spend any money on it” you will die when it gets inflamed if you ignore it. Your appendix is part of you and when it goes bad you have to deal with it. Other people in your society greatly affect you and when they go bad their condition vastly affects you no matter how much conservatives wish that weren’t true.
