The Federalists’ purpose for writing the 2nd Amendment was to guarantee the existence of the state militias which could be called up by the President in order to put down insurrections and invasions. It says so right in the text.

The 2nd Amendment was never enacted to provide arms to attack a government elected pursuant to the Constitution. People losing elections attacking the elected government is terrorism.

If the Constitution were ever eliminated and the military and police became the enforcers of a totalitarian government, you’re kidding yourself if you think hand guns and rifles would be effective against trained military forces equipped with modern weapons.
